Bladder Retraining for Incontinence

This can be a useful approach for an overactive bladder and is best done under the supervision of a healthcare professional such as a GP, gynaecologist, urologist or Continence Physiotherapist.

A two- or three-day diary of fluid intake and voiding provides a useful benchmark at the commencement of a retraining program, against which progress can be measured.

The basic principle is to establish and maintain healthy bladder habits while gradually extending the interval between trips to the toilet. It can be as psychologically challenging as it is physically, but persistence and determination usually pays off as retraining can be highly effective.
